They abuse a vast array of substances including: narcotics, over the counter drugs, alcohol, food and other products. One might question seeing food being on the list. However, many people suffering from depression and/or other emotional problems show these symptoms in in overeating or under eating. One recent study found over half of those responding suffered from anxiety.
The “pressure” to conform to society’s norms and/or standards can push some to finding solutions in unorthodox ways. However, is the pressure that much worse? Or is it possible that when students avoid the normal interactions traditionally found within youth, they retard their own emotional development.
One source found modern technology and relaxed standards found within some education programs can have mixed results. School is about more than the transfer of knowledge. It should also help prepare the student to function as a productive member of society.
