Textbooks and Supplies
One of the most overlooked expenses when deciding to further your education is the cost for college textbooks and incidental supplies. Textbooks can cost hundreds of dollars, high-tech calculators, computers and other supplies can really take a bite out of a budget. Some schools have sought to decrease book costs through the use of E-books, this can reduce costs by a great deal, but not every school uses them. In addition, some schools list E-books as an option, others list them as mandatory and some students still prefer textbooks.
Students should also check the syllabus, often professors will post updates saying a particular textbook is no longer required. Next remember used books are often an acceptable option. The cheapest source can be finding another student that already took the course and buying it directly. Another source for new and used books is the local bookstore. However, there can be a limited supply of used books in the local bookstore so shop early.
One thing to remember is some courses use online sites in conjunction with the textbook and/or classroom. Often one needs to have an access code to enter the site. These codes sometimes are provided by the instructor of the class. However, their more likely to come with the new textbooks, but they often can be purchased separately so one might be able to use a used textbook. The codes usually come in a sealed envelope or packet. Once activated the key is usually good only for a set period of time. The important thing to remember is to verify the code is good before one overpays for a used book with no code or an expired code.
Finally, this is the age of technology where most people have access to computers and smartphones so use them. There are numerous online sources that sell new and used books remember to look around and compare. One can often save 50% or 80% just by taking the time to do repeated searches. In addition, the first and fastest site you research is not always the cheapest so take the time to compare. In addition, do not forget the shipping options and cost. Some sites have overnight shipping if you need it, but it will cost you. So like everything else in your journey to cut cost. Start shopping early, compare, and give the supplier time to deliver the books and supplies without paying extra for shipping costs.
(A useful note, not everything cost money. Many classes and textbooks have free websites that provide useful tools to help the student study and prepare for tests. One needs to look in the fine print in the front and back of the textbooks or in the syllabus to find the websites. Many students are never told about them or know to look for them.)
